Exporting and Printing

Exporting

Choose File ▸ Export… (⌘E), click the export button in the toolbar, or use Export… in the right-click menu. The export sheet appears before anything is written, so you can set the options first.

Option Choices Notes
Export Selection Only On / off Appears only when something is selected
Show Grid On / off Includes the canvas grid in the output; hidden when exporting a selection
Format PDF, PNG, JPEG, SVG
Scale 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x Resolution multiplier; ignored by formats that have no fixed resolution

Choosing a format. PNG and JPEG produce bitmaps — use PNG for line art and flat colour, JPEG for photographic content. PDF and SVG are vector formats: they stay sharp at any size and can be reopened in other drawing apps.

Choosing a scale. At 2x, a 1000 × 800 canvas exports as 2000 × 1600 pixels. This is how you produce a high-resolution bitmap without changing the document's own size.

Exporting a selection

With objects selected, turn on Export Selection Only.

This is the quickest way to pull a handful of icons or logos out of a larger document.

Printing

File ▸ Print… (⌘P) opens the print sheet, where three options control the output:

Option What it does
Show Page Marks Draws the page boundaries, so you can see where each sheet begins and ends
Show Grid Prints the canvas grid
Auto-Scale to Fit Paper Scales the canvas to fill the paper; on by default

Turn Auto-Scale to Fit Paper off when you need the drawing printed at its actual size — then the canvas prints at 100%, and anything larger than the paper is split across multiple pages according to the paper size and margins set in File ▸ Page Setup… (⇧⌘P).

Printing always covers the current canvas. To print part of a drawing, crop the canvas first, or export a selection and print the resulting file.
